MEEMA, maker of some of our favorite kitchen goods, was one of the select brands that we launched with in 2020. And for good reason. They take discarded denim and cotton and turn it into beautiful towels, aprons, napkins and other kitchen textiles. They live where recycling meets impeccable design meets durability. What a wonderful, and rare, place to be.

And because I found the company at a time when Alex and I were talking about building our family, Vanessa’s inspiration for starting the company spoke to me.

In such uncertain times, with the war in Ukraine raging on and Covid surpassing year two, it was a relief and an honor to get to chat with Ben Moore, founder of sustainable snack business The Ugly Company. His get-to-work, positive attitude wore off on us as we chatted. It was impossible to leave without a smile.

The Ugly Company preaches to never judge a fruit by its cover, stating “we prevent food waste by upcycling ugly fruit and transforming it into healthy dried fruit snacks.” Their snacks are all-natural, non-GMO, and have absolutely nothing added.

When we started Willinglee under the name Little Boxes, Alex and I were initially only looking for local-to-Austin artisans. Jae Benjamin was one of our first connections, and she and her products have been a constant customer favorite since day 1.

Butter + Lye’s skincare products are some of the best sellers in our store—and for good reason! Monique is a biochemist who took her knowledge of chemistry and fused it with her desire to make all-natural products that promote healthy skin.

Abby and I found her entrepreneurial spirit especially contagious, and that combined with her focus on producing incredible products makes us especially excited for the future of Butter + Lye.

Rarely are we so moved by a company’s mission, and commitment to that mission, as we were by Finley’s. They’re nothing short of a model company, and their story is one of the best we’ve ever heard.

After visiting family on their honeymoon and watching their frustrated cousin deal with his baby’s socks consistently falling off, Gabe and Jessica started thinking through different ways they could address the issue. “At the time, we didn’t yet have children of our own so we started our research, asking friends, family, neighbors, and acquaintances if this was a need not yet addressed in the market,” Jessica explains. “We were surprised how many people gave us a very enthusiastic yes!”

For this 2nd episode, we sat down with Abdah Emporium, a skincare company in Grand Rapids, MI. Led by Naseerah Hutcherson, her soaps and scrubs are produced entirely by hand, and the look and smell are amazing. We were intrigued to hear about how she started her business and are impressed by the level of detail and expertise that go into her craft.

For this inaugural episode, we sat down with Brummel & Bivvy, a hand-poured candle company in Austin, TX. Their scents are expertly crafted, and they have quite a few that are perfect for the fall and winter months. We loved hearing about how they created their brand out of a love for the outdoors and a desire to capture the scent and memory of camping.
