The 5 Best Gifts for Moms Who Say They Don’t Want Anything

My mom always says, “once a mom, always a mom.”

And she’s right—our moms are natural givers; their caretaking mentality stays with them no matter how old their children get. The connection between a mother and her child(ren) is a beautiful and special thing, especially when you consider the insane amount of work, money, and stress that goes into raising a kiddo.

So even if a mom says she doesn’t want anything, every mom loves to be appreciated for the sacrifice she gave in raising us… the majority of which time we were either totally incompetent creatures, raging brats, insolent teenagers, or money-sapping young adults. For this reason, when Mother’s Day comes around (it’s on May 9th this year) and we ask her, “what can we get you?,” it’s undoubtedly important not to listen to her advice when she responds, “I don’t want anything—save your money.”

If you’ve got no leads and you’re stuck on what to get, rest assured; here are the 5 best things you can get your mom.

PS We conducted a social media poll to find out which gifts moms prefer. Scroll to the bottom to see the results!👇🏽

1. Cards

While this may be the most obvious thing you can gift for Mother’s Day, it should not be overlooked—it is a must. That said, if you’re only gifting a card, we recommend going beyond just signing your name.

Sit down for 30 minutes to an hour and think about the relationship you have with your mom. Think about special memories you have with her, about the times she’s been there for you, about the unique and special qualities she has. Then write a couple of paragraphs to honor your glorious mama.

When you put in that extra effort to write your own message, a card will be the single best thing you can gift your mom. MasterCard would deem it “Priceless.”

2. Consumables

When a mom says she doesn’t want anything for Mother’s Day, she often means she doesn’t need anything.

If you’re a millennial like us, your parents are probably at an age where they own everything they need and can purchase everything they want themselves. (Some of our parents may also have basements and closets full of stuff they’ve accumulated over the years and you don’t want to add to that. Here’s more info on gifting with minimalism in mind.)

To avoid adding to the pile of stuff she already has, gifting mom a consumable is a surefire way to get her something she’ll use (not collect).

Our top picks for moms? Treats, candles, and wellness products.

3. Experiences

Ah, the gift of time! Whether you gift her an experience she can enjoy on her own or one that she can share with you, thoughtful experiences are something moms love to receive, but rarely think to ask for.

What might your mom enjoy doing for herself? Would she melt at the chance for a spa massage? Does she enjoy getting her nails done? What might she want to do with you? Has she been talking up a new museum exhibit? Does she love watching live music or a ball game? Is she adventurous? (Skydiving? Snorkeling?) Perhaps she’d enjoy an Airbnb getaway (to visit you!)? Or maybe she’d prefer connecting with her partner: dance classes? Cooking classes? The list is as long as your mom’s interests.

4. Flowers

What mom doesn’t love flowers? They look beautiful, smell amazing, and will lift any room they’re placed in. They are a wonderful token of our love, generally lasting a week or more, and provide a reminder of our appreciation. They’re also sustainable if composted when they start to wilt!

If you’re interested in longer-lasting flowers, ones that last years, we highly recommend checking out our dried flower bouquets. They are beautiful, last forever, and don’t require water. Easy-peasy!

5. Garden/Outdoor Products

Many moms love working in the yard and being outside amongst nature. Gardening equipment, plants, seeds, and soil make wonderful gifts.

Don’t fall into the trap of only thinking of gifts that go inside the home! For many moms, the yard is just as important, and seeds, saplings, and shrubs are affordable gifts that your mom will enjoy year after year. Because moms are caretakers, many of them love taking care of plants!

6. Bonus: Cooked meals

If you live close enough to your mom, cooking her a meal and bringing it over can be a great way to treat her. Giving her a night off from kitchen duty also provides a wonderful reason to meet up and spend some quality time together.
